The collection is divided into two series: papers and photographs. The papers are concerned with the business, G.A.R. and personal papers of George Johnston. George Johnston's business papers are mainly concerned with the building of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. Also included are Civil War letters to his son, and pension materials. Letters from William M. Johnston to his father detail family news and the younger Johnston trying to set himself up in business assaying mines. Also included is a diary of Sarah Alice Holmes. The photographs include family portraits, Civil War era photographs, scenes of the west from the late-nineteenth to the early-twentieth centuries, and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in downtown Indianapolis.

George W. Johnston served with the Fourth Indiana Battery during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to Indianapolis, was active in the G.A.R. and served on the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Commission. Upon retirement, he bought land in Florida. William M. Johnston was the son of George W. Johnston. He attended the Colorado School of Mines, and worked in mining in Arizona, Colorado and Nevada.
